📍 Fishing Destination

The fishing grounds are located within a vast mangrove ecosystem approximately 1.5 hours from Ho Chi Minh City.

These protected waterways feature winding channels, submerged structures, muddy flats, and tidal creeks that create ideal feeding zones for predatory fish. The mangroves are rich in biodiversity and provide excellent opportunities to encounter a variety of saltwater and brackish-water species.

Unlike crowded fishing lakes or commercial fisheries, this is genuine wild fishing where every catch is earned through skill, strategy, and persistence.

🐟 Target Species

Barramundi (Asian Sea Bass)

One of Southeast Asia’s most sought-after sportfish, barramundi are famous for their explosive strikes and spectacular jumps. Fish ranging from 2–8 kg are regularly encountered, while larger specimens are always possible.

Sea Bream

Sea bream are highly respected among local anglers for their strength and challenging feeding behavior. They provide excellent sport on light tackle.

Barracuda

Fast, aggressive, and equipped with razor-sharp teeth, barracuda are exciting predators that readily attack lures and live bait.

Additional species may also be encountered depending on season and conditions.

🎣 Fishing Techniques

Depending on tides, weather, and fish activity, guides may employ several fishing methods:

Lure Fishing

Cast soft plastics, hardbaits, topwater lures, and jerkbaits around mangrove edges and structures where predatory fish ambush their prey.

Live Bait Fishing

When conditions require a slower approach, live bait can be highly effective for targeting larger barramundi and other predators.

Structure Fishing

Focus on submerged timber, creek mouths, mangrove roots, and current breaks where fish concentrate.

⚠️ Important Note – Tide, Water Levels & Fishing Conditions

There is one important factor that guests should be aware of when joining our Ho Chi Minh City Mangrove Fishing Adventure: the tides and changing water levels in the mangrove system.

Southern Vietnam experiences two main seasons — the rainy season and the dry season — and the water level throughout the mangrove area is also strongly influenced by the daily tidal cycle.

Water conditions can change surprisingly quickly. At certain times, the tide may bring enough water into the mangrove channels for a motorized boat to navigate easily. However, only a few hours later, as the tide recedes, the water level can drop significantly.

In some areas, the water may become too shallow for a motorized boat to operate safely. Attempting to navigate these shallow sections could cause the boat to become stuck or damage the engine.

🚣 Why We May Use a Small Rowing Boat

When the tide is low and the water level inside the mangrove becomes shallow, we may use a small hand-rowed boat instead of a motorized boat to reach the more remote fishing areas.

This is not a river fishing trip using a rowing boat.

The mangrove area is naturally affected by the tides: when the tide comes in, water flows into the channels and surrounding wetlands; when the tide goes out, some areas become very shallow or may temporarily dry out.

Using a small rowing boat allows us to move carefully through these shallow sections and reach natural fishing areas that may otherwise be inaccessible by a larger motorized vessel.

🐟 Why Low Tide Can Be Good for Fishing

Interestingly, a falling tide can sometimes create excellent fishing opportunities.

As the water retreats from the mangrove system, some natural ponds, deeper pockets and sheltered areas retain more water than the surrounding flats.

Fish may naturally gather in these remaining deeper areas for shelter and feeding.

For anglers, these conditions can create concentrated fishing opportunities and may sometimes make certain areas more productive than during higher water levels.

🌿 A Natural Part of the Mangrove Experience

The use of a small rowing boat should therefore not be considered a downgrade or a change to the fishing experience.

It is simply an adaptation to the natural tidal environment of the mangrove ecosystem.

Depending on the tide and water conditions on your particular day, the fishing team may choose between a motorized boat and a small rowing boat to reach the most suitable fishing areas safely.

Our local guides monitor the water conditions and tides throughout the day and will select the most practical and effective approach for the conditions.
